Advantages of Leveled Book Reading

A “leveled book” is an educational technology that assigns a book a certain reading level. This is often done either by the book’s publisher, author, or a library or teacher. The main advantage to this is that it gives the teacher and student both a marker to judge the student’s progress by.

The most common method of assigning a book with a reading level is the grade level. Books geared for beginning readers would be considered first-grade level. As a higher level of reading comprehension is required, so goes the grade level. The grade-level method of rating a book’s reading level is often based on the American public school system’s curriculums. This works well as a universal book-leveling method because public schools across America teach most of the same concepts at the same grade level as all other public schools.

In theory, anybody in the fourth grade of the public school system should at least be able to read at the fourth grade book level. Although many students of a particular school grade often surpass the assigned book level, book-leveled reading can still be used as an important gauge of the student’s progress, regardless of the actual reading level they are on.

Teachers should be careful to not restrict students to the book level that they are at. While it’s important for students to be challenged in their reading, it’s just as important that they be given the opportunity to read at a level they find comfortable. Doing the latter will help the student maintain an enthusiasm for reading, and make them more likely to take on challenging reading themselves.

While leveled reading can be a great educational tool, in the end the teacher still has the responsibility to gauge a student’s true abilities and limits, and adjust their curriculum accordingly.

Sometime, the web designers ignore to mention the basic information. The worst example of dissatisfying a user is by hiding the price of products or services they offer.
